The extended essay
Teksti:
  • The extended essay offers the opportunity for IB students to investigate a topic of special interest, usually one of the student's six DP subjects, and acquaints them with the independent, high-level research and writing skills expected at university. At SYK this is accomplished through a process of intellectual discovery and creativity which begins in the spring of IB1 and ends before November in IB2. This process includes continuous personal interaction with a teacher-supervisor and a special Extended Essay Day when students present their work to the whole class and all their teachers.
  • Students are encouraged to draw on university level resources, including academic document collections, laboratories and experts in their chosen field. This leads to a major piece of formally presented, structured writing, in which ideas and findings are communicated in a reasoned and coherent manner, appropriate to the subject.
  • The excellence of our students’ extended essays has often attained broader recognition, as, for example, shown by the regular prizes they earn in the Academy of Finland’s annual Viksu competition. Moreover, mention of such rigorousresearch in student applications and teacher recommendations clearly provides our students with an advantage in being accepted to the best universities.

CAS
Teksti:
  • Creativity, Action and Service is an integral part of the IB curriculum. With CAS, every IB student has to engage in creative activities, take regularly part in physical exercise, and do something that benefits others. Each student creates, with the help of the CAS coordinator, his or her own CAS programme which highlights the student’s own interests. Personal growth and the acquisition of new skills are very important for CAS. Students keep a CAS log where they reflect on their activities.
  • Popular activities among our students have included: taking part in the Old Dances (“Wanhat”), participating in Model European Parliament or Model United Nations, singing in the school choir and going camping on our traditional CAS camping trip. Many of our students find volunteer work outside the school, working in retirement homes, kindergartens and hospitals. Over the years our students have also organized various projects where they have done service work abroad, in Thailand and in China for example.

Theory of Knowledge
Teksti:
  • The interdisciplinary TOK course is designed to develop a coherent approach to learning that transcends and unifies the academic areas and encourages appreciation of other cultural perspectives. The theory of knowledge course is in part intended to encourage students to reflect on the huge cultural shifts worldwide around the digital revolution and the information economy.
  • The extent and impact of the changes vary greatly in different parts of the world, but everywhere their implications for knowledge are profound. Theory of knowledge encourages critical thinking about knowledge itself and aims to help young people make sense of the knowledge issues they encounter.
