Elias Lehtonen, Class of 2009

I thoroughly enjoyed my IB studies at Helsingin Suomalainen Yhteiskoulu. The programme itself was challenging and rewarding enough to provide me with the tools and capabilities which have enabled me to cope with my history studies at the University of Cambridge. This is all the more remarkable bearing in mind the fact that I had never studied in English before, and that it was only my second foreign language. In my experience, the programme is of great quality in enhancing independent thinking, analytical skills, and the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively. These skills made the transformation into university life smooth and frictionless for me. The school itself offered me great support and encouragement in my university applications, and helped me a great deal in securing a place in one the world's most prestigious universities. The fact that I was not the first student from the school with such aims, and certainly not the last was encouraging for me, and should be for you too.

Antonio Wirta, Class of 2009

After graduating from the IB in 2009 I headed to King’s College London to study for a law degree. After finishing my bachelor’s degree in London I intend to continue my studies at Cornell University with a graduate degree in law. My ultimate goal is a transatlantic legal career concentrating on dispute resolution. As regards my studies so far, the IB has proved to be an invaluable foundation on which to build on. Having learned much of the skills required of a university student already during the IB, the transition to university was easy and the workload never felt unmanageable. The unique feature about SYK is that the faculty is fully in touch with the expectations and opportunities presented by higher education institutions all over the globe. If you feel outbound, SYK is definitely the place to be!

Emilia Piipponen, Class of 2010

I graduated from the IB programme at SYK in 2010 and am currently studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh. The skills I learned during the IB made the transition into university much more manageable because I already had a learning style that suited the demands of higher education. Having pursued a very practical yet academically demanding degree programme, I’ve found the large number of practical classes that we had in the sciences particularly useful. And looking back, doing the IB at SYK was so much fun, even though at the time we thought that no one else was suffering from sleep deprivation as much as we were.

The teaching faculty at SYK, as well as the IB Curriculum, played a fundamental role in my preparation for higher education studies. As a NCAA Division 1 student-athlete majoring in finance at The University of San Diego, time management, appropriate research skills, and the ability to prioritize are a necessity. These are skills that I feel have been developed and strengthened by SYK's IB program - a program that has helped me to acclimatize to the college environment from the start. However, it is difficult not to acclimate to the surfing and the leisurely weather that Southern California has to offer.

Kalle Mattila, Class of 2010

I entered the IB from a Finnish yläaste; I had never studied in English before. I remember clutching onto my first ever Penguin Classic in class and feeling a mix of both dread and excitement. That sensation never went away: the IB was hardly easy; always challenging, but I think you get out of life what you put in to it. Since graduation, I have completed an international management degree in London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, and worked not only at the globally renowned publication Monocle, but at Penguin Books too. Clearly, none of this would have been possible without the IB. In fact, I was recently hired at Penguin full-time. And guess to what division? The one responsible for Penguin Classics. The other month I saw that same copy of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, that we had read in class, at our beautiful Penguin offices on the Thames, and I thought: yes, of course; be an earnest IB student, it is important in the end.

Katri Piiparinen, Class of 2010

My name is Katri and I study law at the University of Oxford. The chance to learn from some of the world’s best academics in tutorials, the collegiate atmosphere, and the stunning architecture make Oxford an amazing place to study. My years at SYK taught me to be an independent and critical thinker. The atmosphere is supportive and intellectually stimulating, and the teachers, such as Huxley, are truly inspiring.

Oona Piipponen, Class of 2010

I am studying in the University of Glasgow, on its Dumfries Campus. Dumfries is a town two hours south of Glasgow. The campus is small, which means you get a lot of attention from your lecturers and tutors; not something the Main Campus can boast of with its mass lectures. I am studying MA Primary Education, a programme which has only been running for three years, which means it is at the forefront of teacher education in Scotland (and England too). So far I have been very pleased with my choice, it has been great fun as well as a challenge. The wonderful thing about the programme is that you have to take electives from a broad scope of other subjects alongside the teaching courses. I picked English Literature for my first semester and absolutely loved the course! In fact I loved it so much I took a second extra course of it for the second semester. The quality of teaching in the English department of Glasgow University is very high, and it corresponds to the way English literature is taught in IB.

Katariina Kuitunen, Class of 2011

I'm Katariina - I graduated from SYK in 2011 and am now studying Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University. Nothing could have prepared me for my current studies quite like the IB at SYK did. The Diploma Programme itself provides an ideal balance between breadth and depth, and the small class sizes in Higher Level subjects at SYK come close to resembling the set-up of Oxford tutorials. The supportive close-knit community and the incredibly committed and enthusiastic teachers meant I really got the most out of my high school years.
